Delightful Afternoon Tea Ideas to Elevate Your Next Gathering

Afternoon tea is traditional and it blends elegance with comfort. If you're hosting for friends for a casual catch up or organising a more formal event, afternoon tea is a great experience. I still remember hosting my first afternoon tea. Creating the menu, setting the table, and crafting a cosy ambiance. In this post, I will share my afternoon tea ideas to give you inspiration.

I also love going to various afternoon teas at different cafes and restaurants. If you live in Kent, I highly recommend Oad Street's afternoon tea Oad Street Food and Crafts, which I visited at the weekend with my mum and sister.

The Perfect Tea Selection

Choosing the best tea is needed for any afternoon tea experience. I enjoy offering a selection that caters to different peoples personal tastes. Classic favourites like Earl Grey and English Breakfast are always recommended, but I love adding herbal teas like peppermint, strawberry and fruity flavours as excellent caffeine free options.

Another good option is a fragrant jasmine green tea, which offers a refreshing and slightly floral twist.

Savoury Sandwiches Are A Must

Savoury sandwiches are an essential part of afternoon tea. I like to make a blend of traditional and innovative fillings to keep it interesting.

Cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches will always remain a classic, but I also enjoy variations such as smoked salmon with dill and lemon. For a vegetarian option, a roasted red pepper and hummus sandwich is a tasty choice.

Cutting the sandwiches into small triangles not only makes them easy to eat but also adds a refined touch to the overall presentation.

Scones: A Nice Sweet Treat

Scones are a big highlight of any afternoon tea. Serving them warm is best, and I love offering a variety, such as plain scones or scones with cranberry and chocolate chip.

I pair my scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam.

If your feeling adventurous, perhaps consider experimenting with different toppings or fillings such as lemon curd or nut butter to create your perfect scone.

Cakes and Pastries

I think every afternoon tea needs a selection of sweet treats. I love whipping up various cakes and pastries.

A classic Victoria sponge cake is always popular, but I also enjoy baking mini cupcakes and tartlets filled with seasonal fruits, such as strawberries and blueberries.

Adding a few crunchy biscuits or cookies is a nice touch. Aim to create a colourful spread that is inviting to your guests.

Prosecco: A Sparkling Touch

To elevate your afternoon tea even more, you can serve a glass of prosecco alongside the tea.

For a refreshing twist, you could make a simple prosecco cocktail by adding a splash of fruit puree, such as peach or raspberry, or adding in a few fresh berries.

Setting the Scene

Creating the right atmosphere is important for a successful afternoon tea. I love setting the table with beautiful China, fresh flowers, and soft linens.

You could use mismatched teacups and plates which provides a charming and vintage feel for guests.

Engaging Activities

You could make your gathering more lively by adding in engaging activities. Perhaps a light hearted quiz or a trivia game.

By encouraging guests to share their favourite afternoon tea experiences or memories adds a personal touch.

Create Unforgettable Moments

Hosting an afternoon tea is an excellent way to bring friends and family together. It's important to select the perfect teas, tasty savoury sandwiches, delightful scones and sweet treats.

I hope the next time you plan a get together you consider hosting an afternoon tea. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate friendships, enjoy food, and create good memories. Cheers to many delightful afternoon teas in your future!
