Dreaming of Sunshine: How to Start Saving for Next Summer's Holiday Now

The clocks are about to go back, it's dark by teatime and the rain hasn't stopped all week. So what did I do? I sat scrolling through my holiday photos with a cup of tea, and found this one. Blue sky, clear turquoise sea, soft white sand. I could almost feel the sun on my face!
To be honest, it got me thinking. If I want another day like that next year, now is the time to start saving. A little bit put away each month goes a long way, and it means no panic and no holiday on the credit card. So here's how I'm planning for next summer, and how you can too.
Work out what you need
Have a rough idea of where you want to go and what it might cost. Flights, hotel, food, days out, the odd cocktail by the pool. Add it all up and that's your target. It doesn't have to be exact, it just gives you something to aim for.
Break it down into months
A big number can feel a bit scary, so split it up. Take your total and divide it by how many months you've got until you go. Suddenly it looks much more doable. My Monthly Budget Planner is handy for this, so you can see where the holiday money fits in with everything else.
Keep it in its own pot
If the money sits in your main account, it has a funny way of disappearing. Set up a separate savings pot just for the holiday and pay into it on payday, before you get a chance to spend it. Out of sight, out of mind!
Try a savings challenge
I love a savings challenge because it makes it feel like a bit of a game. My 52 Week Savings Challenge Tracker starts small and builds up over the year, and ticking off each week is very satisfying. An old jar for your loose change works a treat too.
Book at the right time
Keep an eye out for the January sales, as there are often good holiday deals after Christmas. Going outside the school holidays can save a lot as well, if you're able to. Always compare a few sites before you book, prices can be very different for the exact same hotel.
Watch the little extras
It's the little things that add up. Luggage fees, airport food, sun cream at holiday prices. Pack light if you can, take snacks for the journey and buy your toiletries before you go. That saved money is better spent on a nice meal while you're away.
Something to look forward to
Having a holiday to save for really does help get you through the long winter months. Every time I pay into my pot, I think about that clear blue water and it puts a smile on my face. So start small, start now, and next summer you'll be the one paddling in the sea.
