Working Cocker Spaniel vs Show Cocker Spaniel: What's the Difference?

When I tell people Jasper's a working cocker spaniel, I usually get a slightly confused look. Aren't all cocker spaniels the same dog? Not quite and the difference matters more than people expect, especially if you're choosing a puppy.

Cocker spaniels split into two types years ago: working and show. They're still technically the same breed, but breeders have selected for very different things in each line, and it shows in both temperament and body.

Build and looks

Show cockers are the ones you picture when someone says "cocker spaniel" a bit stockier, with a rounder head, longer ears, and a fuller coat. Working cockers, like Jasper, tend to be leaner, with a flatter skull, shorter ears, and a shorter, more practical coat that doesn't pick up half the garden on a walk.

Energy levels

This is the big one. Show cockers were bred to look good and behave calmly. Working cockers were bred to do a job flushing and retrieving game all day, in all weather. That difference hasn't gone anywhere just because most working cockers these days are pets, not gundogs.

Jasper has more energy than any dog I've ever met. A short walk doesn't touch the sides. He needs proper exercise, mental stimulation, and something to do, or he'll find his own entertainment and it's rarely something I'd have chosen for him.

Temperament

Both types are affectionate and people-oriented, but working cockers tend to be sharper, more driven, and quicker to pick things up, for better or worse. They're brilliant if you want a dog that's genuinely switched on and easy to train. They're hard work if you wanted a dog to nap on the sofa most of the day.

Which one's right for you?

If you want a calmer companion who's happy with a couple of decent walks a day, a show-type cocker is probably the better fit. If you want a dog that'll come running, swimming, and hiking with you, and who thrives on having a job to do, a working cocker like Jasper might be exactly what you're after.

I wouldn't swap Jasper for the world, but I also went into it with my eyes open about what a working line actually means day to day. That's the bit I wish someone had properly explained to me before I brought him home.
